This past Saturday the kids and I went to the SG zoo. Everyone kept telling us that we just had to go the zoo while we were here. All the while I was thinking a zoo is pretty much a zoo, right? Well, I must admit that I stand corrected, the SG zoo is a pretty amazing place and is nothing like any other zoo I've ever been to. I guess to describe it you can image a zoo in the middle of a beautiful rain forest. It was really cool because you could get up so close to all the animals...sometimes a little too close, to the point of my being nervous for the kids safety. This was especially true when we were in the kangaroo (and some huge bird) area - refer to the video below. First of all there weren't any "zoo personnel" in the area and there were only these little wooden fences around where the animals were...so nothing was keeping THEM from jumping right over into our space and nothing was keeping US from jumping right over into their space. That's right, there were people jumping into their area and running right up to the kangaroos and ostriches (I think that's what they were...either that or some other freakishly large bird) and taking pictures with them. I was just imagining some disgruntled kangaroo kicking someone in the head for getting too close. At one point Connor was just standing at the fence watching the little roo's when all of a sudden one of the big birds came out of nowhere on his left side and put it's big beak about a foot away from his head. I about had a heart attack and quickly pulled him back in fear of it pecking his eye out or something. I was not about to make another trip to the ER! In the video below you can see some girl taunting it with her umbrella...real smart lady!Friday, September 05, 2008

I can't wait to go there with you.
Mayah,
You have on the perfect top for a zoo visit! I love that elephant shirt of yours.
I can laugh at the multiple, "Connor stay back(s)!" in the video because I know I'd be doing the same thing! I LOVE IT! I also love the "HA-LOW's" in the video. In Ukraine any time people knew you were an American they would always "try" their English out on you.
That's a little too close for comfort for me. I thought the Frankfurt Zoo was crazy. Seriously, there is a SMALL ravine and those little wooden fences in between US and the Lions and Tigers!! But, there's no "ravine" for you with those animals....that's insane!!
I can't believe how close you can get. It make me nervous thinking about it.
I have a hard time at the S.F. zoo, you know with the lovely recent happenings of attacks, and those lion dens look pretty secure.
Yikes... those kangaroos are wreally close.
This is such a wonderful life experience for your children. You are a wonderful family. I am so proud.
