If you are thinking that both of these little chiquitas look like they're about to cry, then you are absolutely, 100% correct! We like to call the highchair the torture chaimber around our house these days...Mayah at least would like to eat her rice cereal and baby food fruit, but Ava on the other had won't even open her mouth even the tiniest bit when a spoonful of something comes her way. It's been a good 2 months of me trying twice a day (sometimes only once b/c it's such a hassel) and she still isn't making progress...ugh! I am in some major need of advice on this one! She's almost 8 months old and won't even touch her baby food. She's definitely gaining weight so I'm not worried about that, but her only source of nutrition is breast milk....and let me tell you, that MUST change at some point!! Mayah and I did find one trick that worked for about 10 min., but it's borderline cruel, so we won't be using that tactic anymore...and besides Ava caught on to our little trick so it doesn't work anymore. Curious? We would plug her nose and she'd immediately open her mouth, then I'd quick put a spoonful of the cursed baby food into her mouth. Mayah and I thought we were pretty tricky and Mayah even took some video of it, but once I reviewed the footage I realized that some might think it was way to mean of a mom to being doing that to their sweet little baby...so I opted to simply tell you about it...way less incriminating :-)

Aviva STILL won't eat baby food either. Just Kix. And now cherries. I know, crazy. She just had her 9 month check up and the doc said to just keep trying and give her whatever she'll take. So frustrating.
hey lady? how are you? so austin was the same way for a bit, but he eventually caught on. just keep giving it to her and one day she'll suprise you. it's so frustrating though especially because you feel like you're wasting so much food.
I can't believe how much those two look alike at that age. I only caught it when I saw the torture chair was different. They're so stinkin cute!
I'm so sorry, I've been watching Kristin with Aviva and it's sooooo frustrating. Who doesn't like food?? Wish I had some good advice but I'm afraid I'll just have to wish you luck!
Hi Sandy. This is Angela Hawkins (I don't know if you know or remember me . . . Ann Arbor, Jason gave Brian rides to law school . . .). Writing a comment means I admit to reading your blog (and that I am sooooooo jealous of Ava's sleeping habits).
I don't know if you'll even read this, but since you asked for ideas I decided to chime in (as I've got many picky eaters around here). I have a couple of suggestions you could try. Michael (8 mo) started off not opening his mouth whenever I gave him a spoonful of something. Fortunately, he puts everything in his mouth (Elliot didn't so this probably wouldn't have worked with him) so instead of putting the pressure on him to open up, I dipped a spoon in some baby food and completely gave the spoon for him to hold and play with (and TASTE). As soon as he licked off most of it, I'd quickly trade another dipped spoon with him. After a few days of this, he got the hang of it and I could put more on the spoon. It is VERY messy, but so worth it (and a LOT less stressful). Lately I've been able to spoon things into his mouth, but whever he's reluctant, I take the pressure off and give him the spoon so that he feels more in control. Also, as soon as he started to show any signs of being full or wanting down, I'd get hiim down immediately so that he'd associate the high chair with pleasant experiences.
Another idea you could try is baby led weaning (google it). Here you don't even bother with pureed food . . . you just let them at regular food (provided it's not something they'd choke on).
And if the high chair isn't working for now (due to unpleasant experiences with it) have picnics for a day or two, or hold her on your lap . . . until she has better experiences with food and you can try it again in the high chair.
Good luck!
