My bookworm...

In Mayah's post she wrote about her reading and how "Sandy thingks it is amasing", this is what prompted that comment...so, I came home from my AZ girls weekend to find my little miss Mayah a changed woman. Let me just start off by saying that yes, my daughter is a smarty pants in all implications of the phrase...all the way from her divaliscious attitude to her genius child brain (I can say that right? I'm her mom so I should be entitled to a little bragging!). So anyways, it's always been a bit of a struggle to get her to sit down with me and have her read to me. If it's me that's doing the reading then great, but when it's her turn she's the type that does it as quickly as she can so she can get back to playing (although she is pretty good about reading by herself in bed before she goes to sleep, but I just think that's her ploy to stay up a little later). Mayah is a really good reader, but that love for books just isn't there yet like I want it to be. She began reading before she was 3 and pretty much taught herself how to do it (I am already getting nervous about teaching Connor how to read b/c I really don't know how to do it when the child actually needs to be taught and doesn't just "get it" from day one!! I can already tell it will be much, MUCH different with him) So you can imagine my surprise when I came home from the weekend and found her tucked away in a corner with a stack of books (we always get at least 40 easy chapter books from the library so we are well stocked, her favorites are the Magic Tree House ones...just as long as I don't get any late fees for those 40 books!!). She says to me "Mom, I'm done reading these could you get me some more?" She had already been sitting there reading for a good hour and continued to read for another hour when I got her some other books. Maybe the secret is to let her do it on her own...she always has been extrememly independent so maybe the only reason for her putting up a struggle before was becasue of the simple fact that it was mom asking her to do it (this gives me much dreaded insight into her teenage years!!). I didn't want to write this post to say that Mayah is an incredible reader or anything (I actually almost didn't write it because I didn't want anyone to think I was being way to braggy braggy), but I was just so excited that she seems to be developing that love for reading that I've always wanted for her. I am obsessed with reading so it gives me hope that she'll follow in my footsteps. I asked her why she loved reading all of a sudden and she just looks and me and says "Oh, well I just really love all the cool places you can go in a book and finding out what happens in the end". So, of course, I told her how excited I was that she was so in to reading, etc., etc. and that is what prompted her post topic :-)

It's ok to do some bragging on your kids. If you don't you know I certainly will.

I love her answer to why she loves to read. She truly gets what reading a good book is all about! That is because she has such a fantastic imagination!

It is such a blessing to have reading and math come so easily for Mayah and yes your other children will come at it from different angles and different levels. (but you already know that.) That is what makes each child so very special. Don't ever worry about Connor. He's a lot smarter than he let's on right now.

Your challenge for Mayah will be keeping her challenged in school. You are certainly challenging her and Connor at home in a very fun way.

I love Mayah.

Ummm... want a book for you? It is the gal who wrote the vampire books... you know what I am talking about right? She just came out with one yesterday called "the host", by Stephanie (Stefanie?) Meyer. Go dive into it miss sandy.
